5 Night Dahabiya Nile Cruise Luxor to Aswan Nile Cruise
Sail the Nile in Style on a 5-Night Dahabiya Cruise from Luxor to Aswan
A voyage along the Nile between Luxor and Aswan reveals one of Egypt’s most atmospheric and least hurried landscapes. Unlike standard cruises, this stretch of the river unfolds through quiet sandstone cliffs, remote islands, desert valleys, and ancient quarry sites that remain largely untouched by mass tourism. The Dahabiya—an elegant traditional sailing vessel—offers the only way to access many of these shallow riverbanks and secluded anchorages.
The journey moves southward from Esna through El Kab, Edfu, a dedicated river sailing day, Gebel el Silsila, and Kom Ombo before reaching Aswan. Along the way, temple visits are balanced with long stretches of pure river navigation, island stops, desert walks, and moments of stillness on the Nile itself.
A private Egyptologist accompanies every excursion from start to finish, ensuring historical continuity and interpretation throughout the journey. All transfers, entrance fees, and logistics are pre-arranged, allowing the itinerary to flow entirely around exploration and experience.
Cruise itinerary
1Esna – Embarkation
Your journey begins with a private transfer from Luxor Airport or your accommodation to Esna, located south of Luxor.
Upon arrival, you board the Dahabiya and meet the crew for cabin check-in and orientation.
The experience starts with a guided visit to the Temple of Khnum in Esna, a remarkably preserved Ptolemaic-Roman structure located deep below street level and dedicated to the ram-headed creator god.
A walk through Esna’s traditional markets is followed by lunch onboard. The vessel then sails south through the Esna Lock into open Nile waters.
Dinner and an overnight stay take place at a quiet riverside anchorage.
2El Kab – Edfu – Island Anchorage
Breakfast is served on deck as the Dahabiya sails toward El Kab.
Here, you explore one of Upper Egypt’s oldest cities, once a regional capital. The site includes temple remains dedicated to the goddess Nekhbet and a series of decorated rock-cut tombs featuring vivid scenes from the New Kingdom.
After lunch onboard, the cruise continues to Edfu, where a horse-drawn carriage transfers you through the town to the Temple of Horus.
This monumental structure is considered the most complete ancient temple in Egypt, with its pylons, courtyards, and sanctuaries preserved in exceptional detail.
Following the visit, the Dahabiya sails to a secluded island anchorage for the night, where dinner is served on deck or along the riverbank.
3Sailing Day – Island Stop – Gebel el Silsila
This day is dedicated entirely to the rhythm of the Nile.
The Dahabiya sails south through open landscapes with no scheduled temple visits. After breakfast, the journey continues at a relaxed pace, with time to enjoy the river environment.
In the afternoon, the vessel stops at a Nile island for swimming or a quiet walk ashore.
Later, an optional desert excursion leads into a valley marked by ancient hieroglyphs and Stone Age rock carvings, once part of a trade route connecting Egypt to Libya.
By evening, the Dahabiya moors beneath the illuminated cliffs of Gebel el Silsila. Dinner is served under the stars on deck.
4Gebel el Silsila – River Sailing – Aswan Approach
The day begins at Gebel el Silsila, where you explore one of the Nile’s most secluded archaeological sites.
The visit includes sandstone quarries that supplied material for Egypt’s great temples, along with rock inscriptions left by ancient workers.
You also visit the small rock-cut chapel of Horemheb, accessible only to small vessels and rarely seen by travelers.
After a riverbank lunch stop, the Dahabiya continues sailing south with optional swimming breaks along the way.
As the landscape transitions from sandstone cliffs to granite outcrops, the river begins its approach toward Aswan. Overnight is spent onboard in a quiet mooring area under the open sky.
5Kom Ombo – Sailing to Aswan
After breakfast, the Dahabiya arrives at Kom Ombo.
Here, you visit the unique double temple dedicated to Sobek and Haroeris. Its perfectly symmetrical design—featuring twin halls and sanctuaries—sets it apart from all other temples in Egypt.
You also visit the Crocodile Museum, which preserves mummified crocodiles from the surrounding region, reflecting the animal’s ancient sacred status.
Following lunch onboard, the cruise continues its final sailing stretch toward Aswan, where granite landscapes begin to replace sandstone cliffs.
The Dahabiya moors overnight near Aswan, as required by navigation regulations, with dinner served on board.
6Disembarkation in Aswan
Breakfast is served on deck with views of the desert meeting the Nile.
After disembarkation, a private vehicle transfers you to your accommodation or departure point in Aswan, marking the end of the journey.
